EXERCISES

LECTURES

Week 1
We have a short briefing on this module and go through each assignment. Seniors' examples were shown in the class.

Week 2
Introduction to the topics:

  • Frame Rate, Timing & Spacing
  • Slow in and Slow Out
  • Timing Chart
  • Arcs

Week 3

INSTRUCTIONS

Exercise 1: Bouncing Ball Animation
To better understand animation and Adobe Animate, this exercise focuses on becoming familiar with key principles such as timing, spacing, slow in and slow out, and arcs.

Progress

Follow the steps:

  1. Name the layer "Floor", then a line on this layer.
  2. Use key F5 to add frames until it reaches 24F (1 second)
  3. Add a new layer "Ball", and use the oval tool to draw a ball. (Ball color can be change)
  4. Add a new layer "Arc".
  5. Draw one line on "Arc", and use the selection tool to make the arc.
  6. Repeat Step 5 to make more arcs from big to small.
  7. Repeat Step 2 in layer "Arc"
  8. Copy (ctrl+alt+c) the first frame of the ball and paste (ctrl+alt+v) it. After pasting move the ball to the edge of the arc. Repeat a few times until the ball is placed on all edges.
  9. Open "onion skin" to see the before position of the ball.
  10. Add frame (F5) to each frame that has the ball. (To decrease the speed)
  11. Repeat Steps 8 and 9, but move the ball to the middle of the half arc.
  12. Repeat Steps 8 and 9, but move the ball between the edge and the middle of the half arc. (Only for the upper part of the arc)
  13. Export > Export video/media > Format : Quicktime & Preset: Default (Animate) > Export

Exercise 2: Squash And Stretch Ball With Tail Animation

This exercise aims to understand the design principles of drag, follow-through, overlapping action, and squash and stretch.

Progress
Continue to Ex 1, and use the free transform tools to resize the ball. The last dropping ball must touch the edge. As the ball reaches the ground draw a ball (original) to give it a recovery action before bouncing off again.

Next after finishing adjusting, add a new layer named "tail", and use the brush tool to draft the tail (*Adjust the opacity < 50%). After the draft, add another one more layer and name it "clean up". Trace the drafted tails on this layer to make it cleaner.

FEEDBACK

Exercise 1: Bouncing Ball Animation

  • View > Snapping > Off all the functions (Make the object won't align automatically.)
  • Download Quicktime to open the video. *Pro Quicktime can edit the cuts.
  • The higher the arc, the more balls to add to show in and out.
  • As the arc becomes lower the distance between the balls is wider.

Exercise 2: Squash And Stretch Ball With Tail Animation

  • As the ball is closer to the edge, it will be more flat and long.
  • The tail must be connected to the previous one.

REFLECTIONS

Exercise 1: Bouncing Ball Animation
This exercise served as my initiation into "Adobe Animate" and gave me a solid understanding of its functionality. Focusing on the exercise, I understood the lecture's notes more effectively. Engaging in this exercise has fueled my anticipation for upcoming assignments even further.

Exercise 2: Squash And Stretch Ball With Tail Animation Through this exercise, I became familiar with its basic tools. Also, understand the topic of squash and stretch.
