FINAL PROJECT

INSTRUCTIONS

Final Project: Infographic Video Animation In this group project, we have to create a basic video animation based on our FLIP research topic.

Using a structured design framework, we aimed to present information engagingly to a target audience, focusing on one of three objectives:

  • Creating awareness
  • Explaining a process
  • Defining a concept.

Progress

Week 1 - 3

We have grouped a team of 8 people.

  • Rachel Yeo Rong Qing (Group Leader)
  • Jia Wen Bing
  • Ruthlene Chua Zhen Si
  • Liu Zi Yu
  • Tan Jie Ying (Me)
  • Isabel Tan Xen Wern
  • Nadhrah Binti Abdul Razak
  • Myra Elida Binti Abd Azis

We came up with several topics, such as recycling, cybersecurity, women's safety, traffic safety, dengue fever, and more. After voting and receiving feedback from our lecturer, we finalized our FLIP topic as "Cybersecurity".

After confirming the topic, each of us conducted research, which will help us complete the FLIP presentation slides.

Week 4 - 5

After the presentation, we proceeded with our narrative and storyboard. Since our topic is cybersecurity, our overall style will be serious and formal.

To capture the audience's attention, we decided to start our video with a scene showing people being scammed as the opening, followed by our introduction.

With a clear direction, I started by drawing the storyboard for the opening scene.

The story begins with Person 1 receiving a call. Meanwhile, Person 2 gets a message with a link, clicks it, and gets hacked—losing their money. The scene then transitions into a cybersecurity explanation.

Week 6 - 7

After our discussion, we established four key roles:

  • Scriptwriter X1 (Myra)
  • Voiceover X2 (Tan Jie Ying, Nadhrah)
  • Background music & SFX finder X1 (Isabel)
  • Animation X4 (Rachel, Ruth, Liu Ziyu & Jia Wen Bing)

My first choice was the animation position, but since it was already taken, I opted for the voiceover role. Having taken the Sonic Design module last semester, I saw this as an opportunity to refresh my knowledge and refine my editing skills.

First, I started by highlighting the dialogue in the script. There are five scenes in total, and I am in charge of Scene 1 and Scene 3. These scenes feature three characters: the narrator, the scammer, and the victim.

Next, I began my recording and imported the audio into Adobe Audition after finishing the recording.

I used the DeNoise effect to eliminate background noise and improve audio clarity, along with the DeEsser to soften harsh "sss" sounds for a more natural voice.

Then, I began adjusting the pitch to match each character's voice.

Lastly, I adjusted all the voices according to the values to ensure each character had a consistent pitch.

Final Outcome

REFLECTIONS

For this final project, we were required to work in a group. However, I was not particularly close to my groupmates, as we had only met a few times, and some members were completely unfamiliar to me. During our in-person meetings, we had discussions where everyone contributed their thoughts. However, as time passed, most of us became occupied with our major project tasks, which may have slowed our progress.

Communicating online proved to be challenging. Most group members would read my messages but not respond, and during meetings, they remained silent. I tried to initiate discussions and keep the project moving, and while this did slightly improve communication. I completed my assigned tasks to the best of my ability, but the final outcome was disappointing. Initially, I had high expectations for our final video, especially with three animation students in charge of it.

Due to a lack of discussion and excessive content, our video exceeded the time limit. Instead of refining the content, someone increased the speaking speed, making it too fast to understand. I strongly believe that quality should take precedence over merely fitting within the time limit, so I repeatedly insisted on slowing it down to maintain clarity and effectiveness.

This group project taught me a valuable lesson. Even though I was not the leader, I should have consistently checked on the video’s progress and offered my assistance to others. With everyone rushing to complete their major projects, proactive communication and collaboration were crucial.

Lastly, throughout this module, I have gained a deeper understanding of infographics. I learned that an infographic is not just about collecting and displaying data; it requires structuring information in a visually clear format to effectively communicate with the audience. Additionally, I realized the importance of storytelling in data arrangement, as emphasized by our lecturer from the beginning.
