FINAL PROJECT - VISUAL ANALYSIS

~ Recap in Final Project ~

This project is about visual analysis. Based on the briefing, I must pick one goal from the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG). Make a design that is related to the goal.

Explain the final artwork in around 50 words (including why I chose it and how it relates to the UNSDG goal.)

Describe the visual analysis of the selected artwork.

Observation

This artwork was created in portrait form. The visual element in this poster is the colors used - blue, green, white, and grey. The artist used common colors and lines to express his meaning. A glass of water is pouring out in the right corner. Have a clearer look you can see the blue part of the Earth has a wave on it. This will give you a visual error, making you think that the Earth's 'container' is containing water. Words on the left reinforce the author's intent.

Analysis

The design principle of this artwork is movement. Starting from the glass of water, it pours out the water. It creates a flow, downwards to the Earth. The water inside the Earth has a wave on it. It is moving inside also. After this series of movements action, you will find out that there are some words beside the falling water.

Interpretation

This is a work that expresses how many human beings on Earth can't access clean water. Before you read those words, you might think you see the earth holding water. After you read those words, you will find that the gray part of the earth represents the 40% of human beings who can't access clean water. The glass represents the clean water source. The significance of this artwork is to make people cherish water sources and remind people not to waste water.

Idea Exploration

Figure 3.2 Sketch

Figure 3.3 Sketch

Based on this goal of 'clean water and sanitation, the first thing I thought of was the experiment I did in secondary school (salt experiment). This is one of the steps in the experiment, using filter paper to filter out clean brine. This is a common way to filter during an experiment.

Figure 3.1, is what I first thought of. I want to show that humans are filtering the earth. Next, in Figure 3.2, the hands represent the scientists. The blue clean water poured in by their hands is the end result of their filtration. Lastly, fig 3.3 shows a parallel world - Dirty and clean. The black oval in the middle represents the filter paper.

Final Outcome

Figure 4.1

I have chosen this design as the final outcome. This is an optimized version of fig 2.3. Based on the feedback from the lecture. I used the bottom of the filter paper as the middle part (black hole). Balance is the design principle in this artwork.

The concept of this work is to show that we humans are purifying the water of the earth.

In this work, two Earths are shown. One is dirty and one is clean. The colors used for Dirty Earth are dark brown (land) and dark gray (ocean). It is what the earth looked like before it was purified. The colors used for clean earth are dark green and light blue. It is what the earth looks like after it has been purified. Dirty earth surrounded by the filter paper. Filter paper refers to great scientists, governments, and engineers. What I want to express here is that they help humans filter water sources just like this filter paper, so that we can have clean water sources.

Feedback

Is a good idea, but needs more execution. It looks like two balloons and the middle part can be in shape. As in the middle of the hourglass, you can see the things moving through it. It was building up inside. For mine, artwork is just showing two worlds (clean and dirty), must show something is moving in the middle. Also, show out what effort is being made there. Use a representation for it. What is going on in the middle? This will be the focal point of the whole design. very important.  Make the two Earths balance. It can be a black-and-white thing. The whole black but in the middle can be a contrast. Make others read it.

Reflections

This is the final project of this module. After watching the lecture video and project brief, I still felt confused about designing. UNSDG has 17 goals. I understand what the goals mean, but I can't think about the design that I can do. After, listening to the others' artwork explanations and lecture comments during the online class. It made me feel surprised. I didn't know it could be expressed like this before. So, I look back to the goal and do research for each.

I have chosen goal 6 'Clean water and Sanitation'. I search for the artwork on Pinterest. The picture that triggered my inspiration was the water cycler that appears in my secondary textbook. It reminds me of the filter process that I did in the salt experiment. I got three outcomes. During the last week (week 7) I presented it during class and got some feedback from Dr. Charles Sharma Naidu Achu Naidu. At last, I got my final outcome.

In this final project, I have understood the meaning of the goals of UNSDG. At the same time, I learned a way of doing visual analysis. Using shapes to express my meaning and think about how what and why while designing it.
